Terastal Type Calculator Guide - Master the Core Mechanics of Scarlet & Violet Battles
💎 What is Terastal?
Terastal is a brand new battle mechanic introduced in Pokémon Scarlet & Violet. When a Pokémon Terastalizes, it temporarily changes its type, gaining completely new type matchups. Terastal is one of the most important tactical elements in Generation 9 battles.
Terastal comes in two forms: Same-Type Terastal (maintains original type) and Different-Type Terastal (changes to another type). Terastalized Pokémon gain a 1.5x STAB bonus for moves matching their type. If it's a different-type Terastal, they gain an additional 1.5x bonus, for a total of 2.25x damage!
🎯 How to Use the Terastal Type Calculator?
Step 1: Select Attacking Type
Choose the attacking move type from the dropdown menu. This is the basis for determining damage multipliers.
Step 2: Select Defender Types
- Enter the defending Pokémon's Type 1 and Type 2 (if it's a single-type Pokémon, select "None" for Type 2)
- Type effectiveness is calculated according to dual-type rules (resistances and weaknesses of both types stack)
Step 3: Set Tera Type (Optional)
If the defending Pokémon has Terastalized, select its Tera type. After Terastalizing, the Pokémon's original types are completely replaced, and only the Tera type is used for type effectiveness calculations.
💡 Tip: If a Tera type is set, the defender's original types are ignored, and only the Tera type is used for calculation.
Step 4: View Calculation Results
The calculator will display the final type effectiveness multiplier:
- 4x (4×): Super effective, deals massive damage
- 2x (2×): Super effective, deals high damage
- 1x (1×): Normal effectiveness, standard damage
- 0.5x (0.5×): Not very effective, damage halved
- 0.25x (0.25×): Not very effective, damage greatly reduced
- 0x (0×): No effect, cannot deal damage
🏆 Optimal Tera Type Selection Strategies
1. Same-Type Terastal (Enhancement)
Choosing a Tera type that matches the Pokémon's original type grants a 2× STAB bonus (1.5×1.5). Suitable for Pokémon with powerful same-type moves.
Recommended Scenarios: Dragonite (Dragon Tera), Garchomp (Dragon/Ground Tera), etc.
2. Different-Type Terastal (Tactical)
Choosing a Tera type different from the original type can:
- Eliminate Weaknesses: Turn 4× weaknesses into 1× or 0.5×
- Add Resistances: Gain new resistances, improving survivability
- Surprise Factor: Make it difficult for opponents to predict your Tera type
Classic Example: Dragonite using Flying Tera to eliminate its 4× Ice weakness
3. Offensive Terastal
Choose Tera types that can counter common opponents, such as:
- Ground Tera: Counters Electric, Fire, Rock, Steel types
- Fighting Tera: Counters Normal, Rock, Steel, Ice, Dark types
- Fairy Tera: Counters Dragon, Fighting, Dark types
4. Defensive Terastal
Choose Tera types that resist common attacks, improving durability:
- Steel Tera: Has the most resistances (10 resistances + 1 immunity)
- Ghost Tera: Immune to Normal and Fighting types
- Flying Tera: Immune to Ground type
💡 Terastal Battle Tips and Best Choices
Timing Selection
- Early Terastal: Use when the opponent is unprepared to deal surprising damage
- Reactive Terastal: Use to block the opponent's key attacks, especially when facing 4× weaknesses
- Finishing Terastal: Use when you're certain you can defeat the opponent to secure the KO
Popular Tera Type Recommendations
Offensive Types:
- Ground Tera - Wide coverage
- Fighting Tera - Excellent coverage
- Fairy Tera - Counters Dragon types
- Ghost Tera - Counters Psychic types
Defensive Types:
- Steel Tera - Most resistances
- Water Tera - Resists Fire, Water, Ice
- Grass Tera - Resists Ground, Water, Grass, Electric
- Flying Tera - Immune to Ground
Type Matchup Memory Tips
Memorizing the 18 type matchups is fundamental to becoming a master. Recommendations:
- Use this calculator repeatedly to practice and familiarize yourself with common combinations
- Pay attention to special dual-type matchups (e.g., Ground+Flying immune to Ground)
- Remember that "Steel type" is the strongest defensive type
- Understand that "Fairy type" counters Dragon, Fighting, and Dark
⚡ Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Are types completely replaced after Terastalizing?
A: Yes. After Terastalizing, the Pokémon's original types are completely replaced by the Tera type. For example, Dragonite (Dragon/Flying) using Steel Tera becomes pure Steel type, losing both Dragon and Flying types.
Q: Which is stronger, same-type or different-type Terastal?
A: Each has advantages. Same-type Terastal grants 2× STAB bonus for higher damage; different-type Terastal can eliminate weaknesses and add resistances for better survivability. The choice depends on your tactical needs.
Q: How can I determine the opponent's Tera type?
A: Observe the opponent's behavior patterns: if they switch type resistances at critical moments, they likely used a different-type Terastal. You can also judge through probing attacks.
Q: How long does Terastal last?
A: The Terastal state lasts until the battle ends or the Pokémon is switched out. Each Pokémon can only Terastalize once per battle, so use it carefully.
